about

My ex-wife used to say her greatest wish was to be anonymous. "You’re kidding," I’d always respond, half as a question and half as some kind of timid refutation of her claim.

Being a songwriter (aren’t we all seeking recognition?), it was tough at the time for me to wrap my head around her almost antipodal ambition, to disappear into a place of no expectation, no obligation, no connection.

But when you think about something like the birth or age or size or heat death of our universe, it seems pretty foolish to structure your whole sense of self around the pursuit of certain goals. The older I get, the more I see the appeal of this whole namelessness thing.

lyrics

I crowded out your better nature
I couldn’t outright break your heart
I couldn’t leave you or forsake you
So I waited till you fell apart

But now that I’m on your side again
Do you think we can still be friends
Now that we’ve made amends
Do you remember when you were mine
Maybe love doesn’t have to end sometimes

I wanna go where I’m anonymous
Where no one that we know will call upon us and
Goodbye and hello are synonymous
Well I wanna go there, I wanna go there
